Every year on April 25, the world marks World Malaria Day to raise awareness on one of the deadliest but preventable diseases affecting millions of people, especially in Africa. This year’s theme, as announced by the World Health Organization, is “Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can. Now We Must.”
The theme is a clear reminder that malaria can be defeated if governments, communities, and individuals act urgently and consistently. With improved medicines, insecticide-treated mosquito nets, indoor spraying, and stronger health systems, the tools to end malaria are already available. What remains is the commitment to use them fully.
For us in Anambra State, this message is timely. The administration of Charles Chukwuma Soludo has continued to prioritize healthcare delivery through upgrading hospitals, improving primary healthcare centres, promoting environmental sanitation, and supporting healthy living initiatives. These efforts are critical in the battle against malaria. Malaria thrives where there is dirty environment, blocked drainage, stagnant water, and poor access to treatment.
Therefore, the Anambra State Government must continue aggressive sanitation campaigns, fumigation of mosquito-prone areas, community sensitization, and free or affordable testing and treatment in public hospitals. Parents must ensure their children sleep under treated mosquito nets. Communities should keep surroundings clean and clear gutters. Pregnant women should attend antenatal clinics for preventive care. Early testing and prompt treatment should be encouraged instead of self-medication.
As we observe World Malaria Day 2026, let Anambra rise with determination. If government strengthens public health systems and citizens play their part, malaria can be drastically reduced in our communities. Indeed, now we can, now we must end malaria in Anambra State.
