The Residents of Osile Village in Ogbunike Community, Oyi Local Government Area, have commenced the construction of drainages aimed at addressing flooding and erosion challenges ahead of the rainy season.
The project, being carried out under the leadership of the Chairman of Osile Village, Chief Chukwukadibia Vincent Okoye, alongside members of his executive, reflects the community’s collective effort toward environmental protection and sustainable development. The initiative also aligns with the development-driven agenda of the Anambra State Government under Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

Residents said the construction became necessary due to the persistent threat posed by heavy rainfall, which has affected roads, homes, and farmlands within the community over the years. Mrs. Charity Okafor, a food vendor in the area, described the project as timely and beneficial to residents who often experience flooding during heavy rains.
“Whenever it rains heavily, water enters our compounds and sometimes our homes. This gutter project will help direct the water away. We are happy that the village leadership is taking action,” she said.
Also speaking, Mr. Emeka Obi, a youth resident in the community, commended the spirit of unity and cooperation among the villagers.“This is a clear example of what community efforts can achieve. We did not wait for the situation to get worse before taking action. Everyone is contributing in one way or another,” he noted.
Another resident, Mr. Chinedu Okeke, highlighted the environmental importance of the drainage project, noting that proper waterways would help reduce erosion and preserve roads within the village. Aq“Erosion has been a serious concern here. With proper drainage channels, the soil will be more stable and our roads will last longer,” he explained.
Some residents also called for continued collaboration with relevant government agencies and technical experts to ensure durability and proper engineering standards for the drainage system.
Observers say the initiative by Osile Village reflects the growing culture of community participation in development across Anambra State, complementing government efforts and strengthening resilience at the grassroots level.
As the rainy season approaches, residents remain hopeful that the ongoing construction of the drainage channels will significantly reduce flooding and erosion, thereby improving safety and the overall quality of life within the community.
