Residents of Abagana and other communities in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State have expressed concern over the persistent increase in the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas and called for urgent action to ease the financial burden on households.
Recent market surveys indicate a significant rise in LPG prices across Nigeria, with consumers currently paying between N1,800 and N2,400 per kilogram, depending on location. Consequently, the cost of refilling a 12.5-kilogram cylinder has exceeded N22,000 in many parts of the country.
Speaking in an interview with some residents in Abagana on June 16, Mrs. Chinyere Okafor, a trader and mother of four, expressed concern over the impact of the price increase on families. “Some months ago, I refilled my cylinder at a much lower cost. Today, the price has become extremely high and difficult for many families to afford. As a result, numerous households are reverting to the use of firewood for cooking.”
Mr. Emeka Nwafor, a civil servant living at Abagana, called on the Federal Government to strengthen policies aimed at making cooking gas more affordable and accessible to the populace.
Miss Ogochukwu Udeani, a student of the National Open University, Abagana, observed that the rising cost of cooking gas is negatively affecting students, small-scale enterprises, restaurants, and households that depend on LPG for their daily cooking needs.
Available industry reports indicate that LPG prices have continued to rise despite increased domestic production, as consumers grapple with inflationary pressures, foreign exchange challenges, and escalating energy costs.
While the Federal Government continues to promote domestic gas utilization as a key component of its energy transition and economic development agenda, residents have appealed to the relevant authorities to work closely with regulators and marketers to stabilize prices and improve access to affordable cooking gas.
Many residents expressed hope that prompt government intervention, alongside improvements in supply chain efficiency, would help stabilize and reduce cooking gas prices, thereby easing the economic burden faced by families across Anambra State.
