The Provost of Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe (NOCEN), Prof. Victor Ndirika, has charged contractors handling projects at the institution to prioritise quality workmanship, adhere strictly to approved specifications and ensure timely completion of projects. Prof. Ndirika gave the charge on Sept. 11, during an interactive meeting with contractors and the TETFund consultant, Arc. Chidi Okoli of Clinarc Associates, at the College.
The meeting focused on the quality, progress and assessment of ongoing and completed projects, as well as compliance with construction standards and the maintenance of existing facilities. The provost commended the Deputy Director of Works and Services, Engr. Nnamdi Onyili, for his supervisory role in TETFund projects and appreciated Arc.

Arc. Okoli for his continued support and technical guidance to the institution.
He urged contractors to adhere strictly to approved designs, plans and specifications, warning against unauthorised alterations capable of compromising the quality and durability of projects.
Prof. Ndirika stressed that compliance with approved designs was essential to ensuring durable structures, reducing maintenance costs and safeguarding the lives and property of staff and students. He expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of some existing buildings, particularly damaged roofs, which he attributed partly to poor construction practices in the past.
Responding, Arc. Okoli thanked the Provost for the engagement and emphasised the importance of effective supervision and clear instructions at project sites. He observed that lapses could occur when site workers failed to follow established instructions in the absence of contractors.
He reaffirmed TETFund’s zero tolerance for substandard construction and urged contractors to maintain high professional standards, noting that quality delivery would enhance their credibility and prospects for future recommendations.
Arc. Okoli also recommended the planting of about five trees around each building to help reduce the impact of wind and provide additional protection for structures. He described NOCEN as an institution with a strong reputation with TETFund, particularly for its improved roofing standards.
Also speaking, Engr. Stan Okonkwo appreciated the opportunity for dialogue and assured the Provost that contractors would prioritise quality workmanship and timely project delivery.
In his vote of thanks, the Deputy Director of Works and Services said the engagement was designed to strengthen collaboration between the college and contractors while addressing maintenance challenges.
He urged contractors to deliver durable projects that would improve safety, reduce maintenance costs and ensure the uninterrupted use of college facilities.
He specifically called for greater attention to roofing works, including the use of quality timber and proper installation of water collectors to facilitate effective drainage and prevent damage to buildings.
