In a major legislative breakthrough, the Anambra State House of Assembly has passed a bill aimed at eliminating all forms of discrimination against persons living with HIV and those affected by AIDS in the state.

The bill, which sailed through its third reading during Thursday’s plenary session, seeks to safeguard the rights of affected individuals and ensure equitable access to care, support, and protection.

The passage followed extensive deliberation and scrutiny by lawmakers, reflecting a strong commitment to promoting inclusive healthcare and social justice.

Presiding over the session, Speaker of the House, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze, hailed the bill as a “landmark development” that will benefit the people of Anambra. He further announced that the law will officially take effect on July 3, 2025.

The sponsor of the bill, Honourable Noble Igwe, who represents Ogbaru Constituency One, said the legislation was motivated by the urgent need to end stigma, foster empathy, and institutionalize supportive healthcare policies for vulnerable groups.

The new law marks a significant step in aligning Anambra’s public health and human rights policies with global standards.
