Hon. Nweze Tony Nwora, Mayor of Onitsha North Local Government Area, has launched emergency measures to contain severe erosion on Ugwunakpa Road near Okosi Junction.
Residents had warned that heavy rains and poor drainage were carving deep gullies into the roadway, posing a serious hazard to motorists and pedestrians. Invoking Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s “When You See Something, Say Something” campaign, locals petitioned the Mayor’s office for an urgent response.
Mayor Nwora personally surveyed the site and immediately commissioned a team to shore up embankments, clear blocked channels, and install temporary culverts to divert stormwater. “Our roads must serve the people, not endanger them. I will not wait for a tragedy before taking action,” he declared.

Within hours, municipal engineers and community volunteers were on hand, reinforcing shoulders with gravel and sandbags to stabilize the eroded section. Local traders and commuters praised the Mayor’s rapid intervention. “He answered our call. Now we can travel safely again,” one motorcyclist said .
The temporary fixes will hold until a permanent drainage overhaul is integrated into the state’s broader road maintenance plan. Mayor Nwora assured residents that follow-up inspections are scheduled and that the administration remains committed to proactive, citizen-driven governance.
