Mayor of Onitsha North Local Government Area, Hon. Nweze Tony Nwora, has conducted an unannounced inspection of the ongoing construction of the New Market Road.

The 1.6-kilometer roadway—financed by the Anambra State Government under Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration—was originally scheduled for completion within three months.

However, Mayor Nwora expressed disappointment at the sluggish pace of work during his site visit. “This road is critical for reducing gridlock and improving commerce in our community,” he stated. “We cannot allow unnecessary delays to jeopardize public funds or inconvenience residents.”

During his tour of the project site, Mayor Nwora spoke directly with laborers and nearby business owners to assess progress and gather firsthand feedback. Local traders lamented that sporadic site inactivity had exacerbated traffic bottlenecks and hampered customer access to their shops.

The Mayor documented areas where debris had yet to be cleared and where substandard drainage channels threatened to undermine the road’s longevity.

While commending Governor Soludo’s broader commitment to infrastructure, Mayor Nwora reiterated his own dedication to ensuring Onitsha North receives the quality roads it needs.

He noted that the contracting firm was not present when he arrived, a lapse he deemed unacceptable. “I expect the contractor to be accountable and available to explain these setbacks,” he said. “If necessary, I will recommend sanctions or alternative arrangements to complete this project on time.”

Mayor Nwora concluded by vowing corrective measures. He assured residents that his administration would work hand in hand with the state Ministry of Works to expedite completion, implement stricter supervision, and uphold value for every naira spent. His proactive stance underscores a commitment to transparency and the improved well-being of Onitsha North’s citizens.
