The Anambra State Solid Minerals Development Company Limited (ASSMDCL) has successfully concluded its two-day training programme for newly employed geologists and IT students.

The General Manager of the company and team leader of the training initiative, Mr. Ebuka Ujubuonu, explained in an interview that the programme was designed to align with ASSMDCL’s mission by engaging participants in field mapping and data collection activities. He emphasized that the training also supports the Anambra State Government’s broader vision for skill acquisition and human resource development.

Describing field mapping as the process of creating geological maps through the observation, recording, and interpretation of geological features, Mr. Ujubuonu stressed the importance of equipping geologists with relevant skills to excel in the professional landscape. He credited the success of the training to the visionary leadership of the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Professor Charles O. Ofoegbu, whom he praised for his commitment to excellence.

During the field exercise segment of the programme, Mr. Ujubuonu noted that the geologists, equipped with tools such as GPS devices, hand lenses, and field notebooks, conducted detailed observations of rock outcrops. They identified various rock types and documented key features, including color, texture, and mineral composition.

The resource person for the training, Mr. Justin Anumnu—a seasoned geoscientist and mineral exploration expert—focused on geological field mapping, particularly in sedimentary rock formations, which are critical indicators of mineral occurrences.

Mr. Anumnu further explained that understanding the geology of an area provides essential insights into rock types, mineral composition, structural arrangements, and the geological processes that have shaped the terrain over time. He emphasized that basic geological mapping is foundational to any mineral exploration activity conducted globally.

The training is expected to empower participants with practical skills and knowledge, enabling them to adopt a results-driven approach that will contribute significantly to the growth of both the company and Anambra State at large.
