The Onitsha North Local Government Area has once again demonstrated its commitment to Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s clean, green, and progressive vision as Mayor Hon. Nweze Tony Nwora appointed Miss Maureen Igwe as the new Environmental Ambassador of the LGA.

Her appointment followed a viral video capturing her voluntarily cleaning the MCC Pedestrian Bridge—an act that resonated deeply with residents and aligned perfectly with the ideals of the Soludo-led administration’s Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) initiative.

Mayor Nwora, who visited the bridge the following day after seeing the video, described Miss Igwe’s gesture as “true patriotism in action.” Moved by her commitment, the Mayor invited her to the council secretariat for an official interaction to understand what motivated the selfless act.

Miss Igwe, originally from Amagunze in Nkanu East LGA of Enugu State, told the Mayor and newsmen that her love for Onitsha inspired her intervention. She explained that the persistent foul smell on the pedestrian bridge made passage difficult for her and many others, prompting her to take action rather than complain.

“I love Onitsha. It is a city with great energy, and I wanted to contribute in my own little way. The smell on that bridge was too much, so I decided to clean it,” she said.

Mayor Nwora applauded her courage and dedication, noting that her actions reflect the spirit of civic responsibility championed by Governor Soludo.

“Miss Igwe’s gesture represents the new Anambra we are building—a State where citizens take ownership and partner with government to keep our environment clean and safe,” he said.

In recognition of her impact and as encouragement for other young people to follow suit, Mayor Nwora officially appointed her Environmental Ambassador of Onitsha North LGA. The role will involve promoting environmental cleanliness, sensitizing residents, and supporting the council’s sanitation efforts.

Miss Igwe expressed profound gratitude for the honour, describing it as “a blessing I never expected.” Her excitement was shared by officials of the Onitsha North Waste Management Authority present at the meeting, including its Managing Director, Chief Jonathan Ifeme, and Deputy MD, Mr. Obiekwe Asolo.

Mayor Nwora also assured that measures are being put in place to maintain constant cleanliness of the MCC Pedestrian Bridge and similar public facilities across the LGA.

The appointment stands as a shining example of how individual action and government support—working hand in hand, can strengthen the vision of Governor Soludo’s administration for a cleaner, healthier, and more responsible Anambra.
