The Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, has commenced its statutory oversight of the 21 local government councils in the state, in line with Sections 128 and 129 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The exercise, which is aimed at strengthening transparency, accountability and effective service delivery at the grassroots, is part of the constitutional mandate of the House to monitor the execution and administration of laws enacted by the legislature.
Speaking during the commencement of the oversight, the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Ebuka Igwe, who represents Idemili South Constituency, explained that the exercise is designed to assess the day-to-day operations and overall performance of the local government councils.
As part of the process, the committee directed all 21 local governments to submit relevant documents and information, including copies of their 2025 budgets, evidence of virement, lists of capital projects and expenditures, completed projects, ongoing projects with contractors’ details, as well as photographic evidence of projects under execution.
The committee also conducted a session with Anambra West Local Government Council, during which officials appeared before the lawmakers and presented the requested documents for scrutiny.
In his remarks, Hon. Igwe urged local government officials to demonstrate greater dedication and commitment in the discharge of their responsibilities, stressing that effective grassroots governance remains critical to the overall development of the state.
