The Anambra State Government has taken decisive steps to reposition the Main Market as a modern, secure, and investor-friendly commercial hub, in line with its vision of building planned and sustainable markets and cities across the state.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo, announced this during a strategic meeting with Main Market traders at the Anambra State Light House, where he unveiled a comprehensive reform agenda aimed at ensuring the market’s relevance, safety, and economic viability for generations to come.

Emphasizing the importance of access and modern infrastructure, the governor said, “If people cannot park, they cannot shop,” noting that his administration has resolved to fix parking challenges at the Main Market before the onset of the rainy season.

As part of the reforms, Prof. Soludo said that the government would embark on the recertification, decertification, and revalidation of shops to promote orderliness, safety, and proper regulation. He added that a multi-stakeholder committee would be constituted to transparently oversee the process and ensure traders’ interests are protected.

The governor explained that the reconstruction would be carried out in phases, stressing that markets of significant security and economic importance remain a priority for the government. According to him, while infrastructure and enforcement are necessary, the most critical aspect of security is the cooperation and will of the people.

He said the administration’s objective is not short-term repairs but the long-term survival of the Main Market for the next 100 years, urging all stakeholders to work together to make Anambra livable, prosperous, and globally competitive.

Responding on behalf of the traders, the Chairman of the Main Market, Mr. Chijioke Okpalaugo, confirmed that the government presented two clear options—total demolition and fresh construction, or phased reconstruction.

Mr. Okpalaugo said the traders, after careful consideration, opted for the phased reconstruction, commending the governor for adopting an inclusive and consultative approach that allows commercial activities to continue while development progresses.

He assured the state government of the traders’ full cooperation, describing the initiative as a bold and timely intervention that demonstrates the government’s commitment to sustainable development, security, and economic growth.
