As part of its commitment to promoting a clean, green and sustainable environment, the Anambra State Government has donated waste management materials to the Faculty of Social Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

Presenting the materials, the Commissioner for Environment, Felix Odimegwu, said the initiative aligns with the state’s broader environmental reform agenda. He emphasized that Anambra has recorded remarkable progress in waste management, particularly following the declaration of a state of emergency on the environment by Governor Chukwuma Soludo upon assumption of office.

The commissioner noted that the state’s improved waste evacuation system and adoption of circular economy practices have not only enhanced cleanliness but also generated employment opportunities for residents.

Engr. Odimegwu urged students to actively participate in proper waste disposal, tree planting campaigns to combat climate change, and recycling ventures. According to him, maintaining a healthy environment is a collective responsibility.

“Your environment must be your first priority. Clean surroundings promote good health. While doctors treat illnesses, environmental health workers prevent them. Sanitation is not occasional; it is a daily responsibility,” he stated.

He further advised that the donated plastic receptacles be strategically positioned across the campus to ensure efficient collection and evacuation of plastic waste, thereby sustaining a clean and eco-friendly learning environment.

In his remarks, the President of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Mr. Chukwuebuka Anthony, expressed appreciation to the commissioner for the thoughtful gesture and for enlightening students on environmental management. He assured that the materials would be properly utilized to maintain cleanliness within the faculty and the wider university community.
