The Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has emphasised the importance of not taking democracy for granted, highlighting its significance as a historic milestone in Nigeria. “Today, June 12, our Democracy Day, is a notable day celebrated nationwide with a public holiday to honour our democratic journey. I paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for democracy, whether pre- or post-independence, and requested that their souls rest in peace, along with all faithful departed, through God’s mercy.
The governor made these remarks during the 3rd Anniversary of the 8th Anambra State House of Assembly at the State House of Assembly in Awka on June 12.

He acknowledged that no nation is perfect—every country continually works toward improvement. Even countries practicing democracy for decades face imperfections. Achieving a perfect society requires effort and dedication. “Nigeria has its own challenges; security issues, underdevelopment—but steps are being taken to address them,” he said.
“We must not forget our progress. Today, we use technology in elections, yet issues remain. The latest electoral act improves upon previous laws as we strive to improve. Even in the U.S., complaints about elections persist. We must keep strengthening our system, which despite imperfections, is worth celebrating because there is no better alternative,” he added.
He congratulated the Assembly on their third anniversary, praising their productivity and impact on state growth and development. “June 12 is significant because our Assembly was inaugurated on Democracy Day, serving as a reminder to honour our duty and uphold our democratic culture.”

In his speech, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, expressed gratitude to the governor and attendees. He noted that in three years, the 8th Assembly has been focused, productive, and people-oriented, passing over 90 motions and enacting 45 laws, including numerous private members’ bills.
“This success resulted from building confidence in legislation and fostering an environment where good ideas become laws, regardless of origin. One major achievement is the Anambra State Local Government Administration Law, which addressed local government autonomy following a Supreme Court judgment. It has strengthened local governance, created the Office of the Local Government Accountant-General, and ensured timely benefits for workers, teachers, and others,” he stated.
He further committed that the Assembly will continue to strengthen its institutions, improve staff welfare, expand legislative infrastructure—including a proposed administrative block—and digitalize legislative operations to promote good governance, economic growth, and social development.
Earlier, Rev. Fr. Charles Ndubisi, Awka Diocesan Chancellor, called on everyone to embrace the Sacred Heart of Jesus, who patiently waits for us. “Today, the feast of the Sacred Heart, reminds us of His patience and unconditional love. Embracing Him brings peace and rest,” he said.
