Directors of Primary Healthcare from Local Government Health Authorities across Anambra State were honoured on June 17 at the PHC Leadership Challenge award and recognition ceremony at the Banquet Hall, Light House, Awka.
The event celebrated outstanding contributions of PHC directors, programme officers, and other stakeholders driving primary healthcare delivery at the grassroots.

Mrs Philomena Obiageli Aniukwu, DPHC of Orumba South LGHA, emerged Best PHC Director and went home with N400,000. Mrs Lucia Ogochukwu Udalla of Anaocha LGHA placed second with N300,000, while Dr Chukwudi Njelita, DPHC Awka North LGHA, took third position with N200,000.
Reacting, Mrs Ebele Ezelote, DPHC Oyi LGHA, described the initiative as the first of its kind in the state to formally recognise directors, programme officers, and LGA teams for strengthening PHC. She said the awards would motivate health workers to maintain high performance in all PHC activities.

Mrs Chizoba Udegbunam, DPHC Onitsha South LGHA, also expressed gratitude, noting that the forum was timely for appreciating health workers. “The motivation this brings will make workers put in more effort in service delivery at both grassroots and state levels. We thank the state government and organisers,” she said.
Dr Emeka Nzewi of Aguata LGHA said the recognition would encourage PHC workers, adding that government and development partners must not relent in investing in primary healthcare.

Mrs Ifeyinwa Violet Emeasoba, DPHC Ekwusigo LGHA, said the challenge creates healthy competition. “Those not performing well will improve so they can be recognised next time,” she stated. She also commended government interventions in PHC renovation, upgrades, and telemedicine, which she said has helped low-income earners access quality care.
