Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo has unveiled plans to modernise the Nkwo Nnewi Triangle and its surrounding areas as part of efforts to improve urban infrastructure, stimulate economic growth and enhance the aesthetic appeal of Nnewi.

The governor disclosed this during an inspection tour of key locations in Nnewi North Local Government Area, including the Nkwo Nnewi Triangle, Nnewi Post Office, the Main Roundabout, Nnewi Eme Court, the Government Reserved Area (GRA) and other strategic sites.

Speaking during the tour, Governor Soludo said the visit was aimed at assessing the current state of the area and identifying interventions needed to transform it into a modern urban centre capable of supporting growing commercial and social activities.

“We are here to observe and determine the actions required to give this area a facelift. Nnewi will witness major improvements, including the development of leisure centres, housing estates, intra-city and central parks that will help manage traffic, beautify the environment and bring greater organisation to the city,” he said.

The governor noted that the administration’s urban regeneration agenda is designed to prevent cities from deteriorating into slums while preparing them for future population growth.

According to him, projections indicate that the state’s population could rise significantly in the coming decades, making it imperative to invest in infrastructure that will guarantee mobility and sustainable urban development.

“We are working to regenerate and rescue our cities from becoming slums. Without the improvements we are making today, movement within our urban centres would become increasingly difficult in the future. That is why we are dualising major roads and designating truck routes for expansion,” Soludo stated.

He emphasized that road expansion and urban renewal projects would continue beyond the lifespan of his administration, ensuring seamless transportation and improved living conditions for residents.

The governor observed that Nnewi’s rapid growth had resulted in uncoordinated development, with markets, parks and other commercial activities scattered across the city, creating congestion and disorder.

“Nnewi has expanded into a bustling commercial hub, but the growth has not always been properly organised. We are committed to giving the city a new look that reflects its status as one of the major economic centres in Anambra State,” he added.

Accompanying the governor on the tour were the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Barr. Chijioke Ojukwu; Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Felix Odimegwu; Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike; Commissioner for Works, Arc. Okey Ezeobi; and other government officials.

The planned transformation of the Nkwo Nnewi Triangle forms part of the Soludo administration’s broader agenda to modernise urban centres across Anambra State, improve infrastructure and create an environment conducive to business growth and sustainable development.
