The Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, has charged engineers to spearhead sustainable development by harnessing innovation and technology to drive economic growth while safeguarding the environment.
Dr. Aguiyi gave the charge in his goodwill message at the 2026 Annual Lecture Series of the Faculty of Engineering, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, themed “Engineering Pathways to Economic Sustainability: Unlocking Opportunities in Agripreneurship, Oil and Gas and Beyond,”on July 23
He said engineering must transcend the traditional role of solving technical problems to delivering solutions that are environmentally responsible, socially impactful, and economically sustainable, stressing that the future belongs to engineers who can successfully balance innovation with environmental stewardship.

The commissioner urged the Faculty of Engineering to continue producing graduates who combine technical excellence with a strong sense of environmental responsibility, emphasizing that development must meet present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to thrive.
He further advocated for the integration of indigenous values such as discipline, craftsmanship, and service with emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, renewable energy, smart infrastructure, and sustainable materials, describing the synergy as essential for building resilient communities and unlocking sustainable economic opportunities.

Dr. Aguiyi also challenged students, researchers, and industry professionals to develop practical, homegrown solutions to pressing environmental challenges, noting that engineering research and innovation should translate into tangible benefits for society and the environment.
The lecture was chaired by Hon. Dozie Nwankwo, who represents the Dunukofia/Njikoka/Anaocha Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, while the Secretary to the Anambra State Government, Mrs. Chiamaka Nnake, delivered the keynote address.
The commissioner reaffirmed that his message is in line with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s Fifth Pillar of Development Environment and Urban Regeneration which seeks to build a cleaner, greener, and more environmentally sustainable Anambra State through responsible governance, innovation, and sustainable development.
