The Divine Mercy Catholic Chaplaincy, DMCC. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Awka, on August 30, celebrated First Holy Communion, spiritual renewal and preparations for its forthcoming Harvest and Bazaar.
The celebration featured children receiving First Holy Communion after their preparation, marking an important milestone in their Christian journey and their formal participation in the Eucharistic life of the Church.
In his homily, the Chaplain, Rev. Fr. Michael Kins Okpala said Christianity could not be separated from the cross, stressing that Christ redeemed humanity through His suffering and death on the cross.

He urged Christians to embrace their cross, deny themselves certain things, and follow Christ, stressing that believers must work for their salvation and always look forward to the eternal reward.
Rev. Fr. Okpala reminded members that Christian hope is not centered on this world, but on the world to come, where pain and suffering will eventually disappear.

He cited Prophet Jeremiah, who struggled with his vocation but could not abandon it because God’s word burned within him like fire. He said meaningful development requires pain, sacrifice, and self-denial.
Speaking on the occasion, CWO President, Mrs. Charity Uzoma Okoye expressed happiness over the children’s participation, describing the first Holy Communion as remarkable and saying they had eagerly anticipated receiving the sacrament.
The chaplaincy also unveiled its 2026 Harvest theme ahead of the Harvest and Bazaar scheduled for November 15. The Charismatic Society equally held a renewal programme following its one-month life in the Spirit Seminar.
Also speaking, the Catechist, Mr. Emmanuel Okafor appreciated members for their support and encouraged continued unity and commitment. He urged the faithful to support the forthcoming Harvest and Bazaar.
