The newly opened Ike Dunukofia Market Square in Ukpomili Village, Ifitedunu, is poised to strengthen local commerce, support small businesses and create more opportunities for livelihoods as the community expands its economic activities.

The new market provides a dedicated space for traders and entrepreneurs to operate, bringing commercial activities closer to residents while creating opportunities for businesses that depend on trade, transportation, food services and other related activities.

The facility was officially opened on Sunday, Sept. 20, during a colourful ceremony that brought together religious leaders, traditional rulers, community stakeholders, professionals, business personalities and other dignitaries.

For local traders and aspiring entrepreneurs, the market offers a platform to establish or expand businesses, connect with customers and participate more actively in the economic life of the community.

The project is expected to generate indirect economic opportunities as increased trading activity creates demand for transporters, suppliers, artisans, food vendors and other service providers.

The opening ceremony coincided with the 2026 Iwa Ji (New Yam) Festival of Ifitedunu, adding a strong cultural dimension to an event centred on community development and economic activity.

The Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, His Lordship, Most Rev. Paulinus Chukwuemeka Ezeokafor, was among the distinguished guests at the ceremony, alongside other guests from within and outside Anambra State.

Iwa Ji, a longstanding Igbo tradition, provides an opportunity for communities to celebrate the harvest, express gratitude and strengthen communal bonds while preserving their cultural heritage.

The occasion was hosted by Chief Amb. Dr Vincent Chukwuekezie Udobi, JP, Ike Dunukofia, Onwa Ifitedunu, and Ada Chika Udobi, Esq., JP, whose commitment to community development was acknowledged by guests and residents.

The new market square thus brings together trade, enterprise and community life, providing a shared economic space with the potential to expand local business activity and support livelihoods across Ifitedunu.

The celebration ended with prayers and goodwill wishes for sustained economic growth, prosperity, unity and development in the community.
