The School of Postgraduate Studies, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), on Sept. 29 has held a one day capacity building workshop for postgraduate students and lecturers on research methodology.
The workshop, held simultaneously at the university’s Uli and Igbariam campuses, was themed: “Equipping Postgraduate Students on How to Write Methodology, Present Results and Interpretation of Results of the Dissertation/Thesis.”
At the Uli Campus, participants were drawn from Physical Sciences, Natural and Basic Medical Sciences, and Engineering and Environmental Sciences, while those at Igbariam comprised participants from Agriculture, Education, Management Sciences, Law, Pharmacy and Social Sciences.

The Dean of the School, Prof. Osita Chiaghanam, said the faculty based structure was designed to address the specific research needs of different disciplines.
Chiaghanam said the workshop was aimed at strengthening students’ capacity to develop sound methodology, present findings and interpret results, which were essential to producing research that contributed to knowledge.
He said the university was moving away from a system where theses and dissertations were merely completed, stored or published to one where research addressed societal problems, provided practical solutions and had potential market value.

The Dean stressed the need for students to understand and confidently defend their work, rather than appear before panels without adequate knowledge of their studies.
He disclosed that the workshop was the first to be organised simultaneously across the campuses at faculty level, adding that the programme would be extended to the departmental level in the future.
Chiaghanam said the initiative was part of the School’s contribution to the Vice-Chancellor’s vision of enhancing the university’s “Values, Viability and Visibility” through impactful research.
He expressed satisfaction with the turnout and said attendance would be documented to guide future interventions.
