Butchers at Nkpor Main Market have expressed concern over the sharp rise in the cost of cattle, saying the development is threatening their livelihoods and driving up the price of beef in the area.
The traders said the price of a mature cow has increased significantly in recent weeks, making it difficult to maintain normal sales and profit margins. They attributed the hike to high transportation costs, limited supply of cattle, and multiple charges along major livestock routes leading into Anambra State.
Mr. Ogochukwu Nnamani, one of the traders, described the situation as unsustainable. “We can no longer purchase at the old price. If we sell at the same rate, we will incur losses,” he said.
Mr. Afunwa Eze, also a butcher, noted that customers were already reducing their purchases due to the higher cost per kilogram. “People are buying less meat now. Some only come for small cuts that they could not afford before,” he explained.
The price increase is also affecting small meat sellers and food vendors who depend on the market for daily supply. Some said they may be forced to reduce portions or seek alternative sources, which could further raise their operating costs, he pointed out .
The butchers called on the Anambra State Government and relevant agencies to investigate the factors driving the increase and to improve the movement of livestock into the state. They noted that easing transportation challenges and reducing multiple levies along the routes would help stabilize prices. They warned that if the trend continues, many butchers may be forced out of business, leading to a further rise in the price of beef in the coming weeks.
