Theme: Upholding Human Dignity, Ending Torture Everywhere

By Lilian Ezejiegu

Every year on 26 June, the world observes the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, a day designated by the United Nations to reaffirm the global commitment to eliminating torture and safeguarding the dignity, rights and freedoms of all people.

Torture remains one of the most serious violations of human rights. It involves the intentional infliction of severe physical or psychological pain to intimidate, punish, extract information or coerce individuals. Under all circumstances, torture is unacceptable and prohibited by international law, as it undermines the fundamental principles of justice, humanity and respect for human dignity.

For survivors, the effects of torture often extend far beyond the period of abuse. Many endure lasting physical injuries, emotional distress and psychological trauma that can affect every aspect of their lives. The consequences also ripple through families and communities, leaving deep scars that may take years to heal.

This observance serves as a powerful reminder that every individual deserves protection, fairness and respect under the law. Governments, security agencies, law enforcement personnel and public institutions must remain committed to upholding human rights standards,  ensuring that all persons are treated with dignity and humanity.

The day also underscores the importance of supporting survivors through access to healthcare, psychological counselling, legal assistance and social reintegration programmes. Such interventions not only aid recovery but also empower victims to rebuild their lives and regain their sense of purpose and belonging.

In Nigeria and across the globe, efforts to strengthen the rule of law, promote accountability and protect fundamental human rights must remain a priority. Citizens should be encouraged to speak out against torture and all forms of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment while supporting initiatives that advance justice and human dignity.

As we commemorate the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, let us renew our collective resolve to build a world where no individual is subjected to cruelty, violence or abuse. Let us stand in solidarity with survivors and work together to create societies founded on compassion, justice and respect for human rights.

A society that protects human dignity is one that fosters peace, strengthens justice and promotes sustainable development. Together, we can help end torture and ensure that every person lives in freedom, security, and dignity.

Happy International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.
