The Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor, has urged christians to remain firm in their faith and resist practices such as paganism and idolatry, which he said are incompatible with christian teachings. Bishop Ezeokafor gave the admonition during his pastoral visit to Our Lady of Assumption Parish, Nimo, in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Sept. 5, where the parish celebrated its 75th anniversary.

Founded in 1951, the parish marked the milestone with a series of activities, including the planting of a Diamond Jubilee tree by Bishop Ezeokafor and the blessing of a newly constructed podium within the parish premises.
In his homily, Bishop Ezeokafor encouraged the faithful to preserve their christian identity and deepen their relationship with God by faithfully observing the teachings of the Church.
He particularly warned against paganism and idolatry, stressing the need for christians to avoid practices that could undermine their faith and commitment to God.

The Bishop also called on the faithful to understand the distinction between culture, tradition and paganism. He explained that while culture and tradition preserve people’s heritage and identity, paganism and idolatry are inconsistent with the christian faith.
Addressing the newly confirmed candidates, Bishop Ezeokafor urged them to uphold good morals, conduct themselves responsibly and become worthy ambassadors of Christ in their communities and wherever they may find themselves.

The Parish Vicar, Rev. Fr. John Paul Chuwuelobe, who delivered the vote of thanks on behalf of the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Shedrack Anunwa, expressed appreciation to Bishop Ezeokafor for his presence and continued pastoral support to the parish. He prayed for God’s grace, wisdom and strength for the Bishop as he continues his pastoral responsibilities, while urging parishioners to demonstrate their christian convictions through their daily actions.

Rev. Fr. Chuwuelobe also prayed for the conversion of those who had abandoned the christian faith for pagan and fetish practices, urging them to return to the christian faith and embrace the teachings of Christ. A major highlight of the celebration was the administration of the Sacrament of Confirmation to 196 candidates.
