In a proactive effort to tackle environmental hazards and support Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s Clean, Green, and Healthy Anambra initiative, the Mayor of Onitsha North Local Government Area, Hon. Nweze Tony Nwora, has launched a major drainage desilting operation across the council area.
The exercise kicked off along Awka Road, stretching from Savoy Junction to the DMGS Roundabout. The desilting is aimed at clearing blocked drainage channels to ensure free flow of rainwater, minimize flooding, and maintain overall environmental cleanliness.
Key components of the project included the clearing of water tunnels connecting critical areas. One of the most notable achievements is the opening of a long-blocked water tunnel linking Ogboli Road to Awka Road and extending down to Obelegu. Additional areas cleared during the exercise included the ABS/ShopRite Junction to the Guinness Eye Clinic, the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Onitsha, and the vicinity of the Obi of Onitsha’s palace.
To speed up the operation, tippers were stationed along the routes to evacuate debris promptly. The mayor’s office reported that many residents, previously unaware of the existing drainage network, expressed relief and appreciation as water channels began to flow freely again.
Also cleared was the tunnel network running from Ogboli through Chukwurah gutters, down to Obelegu, and connecting to Ifenu Street. The section from Ogboli by Awka Road Junction to Ifenu was also fully desilted and reopened.
Road users, particularly tricycle operators and commercial bus drivers navigating between Awka Road and the Onitsha Main Market, have lauded the mayor’s efforts, noting improved drainage and reduced flooding as key benefits.
This latest initiative follows earlier successful desilting campaigns in parts of the LGA, including Oguta Road near Queen of the Rosary College (QRC), Okosi Junction by the New Cemetery, and Ojedi Road by Agba Street — all conducted under Mayor Nwora’s leadership.
Local authorities said the ongoing desilting project is part of a broader strategy to prepare the city for the rainy season and foster sustainable urban sanitation.
