Every year on February 20, the world observes the World Day of Social Justice, a day dedicated to promoting fairness, inclusion, equal opportunity and respect for the rights of all people.
The day highlights the need to address issues such as poverty, unemployment, gender inequality, social exclusion, and lack of access to basic services. It serves as a reminder that sustainable development can only be achieved when every member of society is given equal opportunities to thrive.
This year’s theme, “Empowering Inclusion: Bridging Gaps for Social Justice,” reminds us that policies and actions must reach the most marginalized, reduce poverty, and ensure that everyone has a voice in decisions that affect their lives. It calls on individuals and organizations to promote tolerance, fairness, and compassion in their daily interactions, recognizing that social justice begins with the choices we make in our homes, workplaces, and communities.
In Nigeria and across the globe, governments, institutions, and citizens are encouraged to work together to build inclusive societies where justice, dignity, and equal rights are upheld. Ensuring access to education, healthcare, decent work, and social protection remains essential in reducing inequalities.
Here in Anambra State, social justice is more than just words; it’s action. Under Governor Chukwuma Soludo, programmes like “One Youth, Two Skills” are training thousands of young people in vocational and entrepreneurial skills, giving them the tools to succeed. Partnerships with UNICEF support child welfare and inclusive education.
At the same time, the governor provided digital tools to the Anambra State Disability Rights Commission, enabling the Commission to drive inclusion for persons with disabilities through community support initiatives and programmes that empower them to participate fully in society. In addition, policies for older persons and other vulnerable groups help ensure that everyone is included and no one is left behind, making social justice a lived reality for all.
These initiatives show that fairness, inclusion, and dignity are not just ideals — they are part of daily life in Anambra, guided by leadership committed to empowering every citizen.
As Anambra State continues to pursue people-centered policies and digital innovation, the observance of World Day of Social Justice reinforces the importance of creating systems that leave no one behind.
