The commercial city of Onitsha in Anambra State is experiencing a significant transformationparticularly along the busy Upper Iweka axis, stretching through Owerri Road and Okpoko towards Bridge Head in Onitsha South Local Government Area.

This positive change is largely due to ongoing environmental enforcement efforts by the Operation Clean And Healthy Anambra- Ocha Brigade.
Under the leadership of Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, the Anambra State Government has intensified its commitment to urban renewal, law and order.

These efforts align with the administration’s broader vision of positioning Anambra as a leading economic hub—often described as the “Dubai and Taiwan of Africa” and the “Silicon Valley of Nigeria.”

The Ocha Brigade, working alongside other social reform agencies and the State Ministry of Environment, has embarked on a comprehensive cleanup exercise across major cities such as Onitsha, Awka, and Nnewi.

This initiative includes the removal of illegal roadside structures, demolition of buildings obstructing waterways, and clearance of abandoned containers previously used by traders.

These structures had long contributed to environmental degradation and provided cover for criminal activities.

Their removal has not only improved sanitation but also enhanced visibility and security. Today, commuters along Upper Iweka can clearly see across major roads without obstruction, and security personnel can operate more effectively without hidden spots for criminal activity.

Residents and stakeholders have expressed strong support for the initiative. In an interview, a pedestrian, Mr. John Nweke, commended the government’s efforts, noting that the exercise has eased traffic congestion and reduced criminal activities in the area.

A local trader by name Mrs magareth obi also praised the development and urged the government to enforce strict penalties against anyone attempting to return to roadside trading.

There is no doubt that the Ocha Brigade’s intervention has marked a significant step towards restoring order, improving urban infrastructure, and enhancing public safety in Anambra State.

The Soludo administration would continue to demonstrate its resolve to building a cleaner, safer, and more economically vibrant environment for all residents.
