‎The Anambra State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to developing Awka into a clean, green, resilient, and sustainable capital city, with environmental sustainability at the core of the ongoing Awka City Project.
‎
‎This commitment was reiterated by the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, during a Stakeholders’ Workshop on the Awka City Project organized by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and ACCIONA Ingeniería of Spain at the Awka South Local Government Headquarters on June 18.
‎

‎The workshop brought together key stakeholders, including the Managing Director of the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA), Hon. Ossy Onuko, the Chairman of Awka South Local Government Area, Prince Chinedu Okafor, government officials, development partners, and community representatives to discuss strategies for sustainable urban development in the state capital.
‎
‎In his goodwill message, Dr. Aguiyi commended the African Development Bank and ACCIONA Ingeniería for driving the initiative, describing it as a strategic step toward transforming Awka into a modern, environmentally sustainable, and economically vibrant city.
‎

‎He emphasized that sustainable urban development must prioritize effective drainage systems, efficient waste management, erosion control, urban greening, climate adaptation, and behavioural change, noting that these are critical foundations for building a livable and resilient city.
‎
‎The commissioner reiterated Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s vision of making Anambra a destination rather than a departure point, adding that the State Government is already implementing tree-planting campaigns, desilting programmes, and waste-to-wealth initiatives in support of the administration’s African Dubai-Taiwan agenda.
‎
‎Dr. Aguiyi further assured participants of the Ministry’s readiness to provide technical support, policy guidance, and community engagement to ensure that environmental sustainability remains central to the Awka City Project.
‎
‎He also urged stakeholders to move beyond discussions and work collectively toward creating a model city that successfully balances infrastructure development, environmental protection, and cultural heritage preservation.
‎
‎“A sustainable Awka is achievable when government, development partners, and communities work together with a shared vision for a greener and more prosperous future,” the Commissioner stated.
