The Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ekene Ogugua, on June 18 paid an unscheduled familiarisation visit to the Anambra State Agency for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education (AANFE), Awka, to assess its operations, identifying areas requiring government support.

The commissioner was received by the Executive Secretary of the Agency, Mrs. Lilian Ezenwaka, who led him and his entourage on a tour of the agency’s facilities and programmes.

During the visit, Dr. Ogugua inspected the skills acquisition and vocational centre, where trainees displayed a range of handcrafted products, including beaded turbans, beaded bags and boubou outfits, observing  other vocational training activities such as confectionery production, liquid soap making and various skills acquisition programmes designed to promote self employment.

Speaking during the inspection, Dr. Ogugua said the visit was intended to provide firsthand insight into the agency’s achievements, ongoing activities and operational challenges, with a view to determining areas where the ministry could offer additional support.

He directed the executive secretary to formally present the agency’s needs and challenges to the Ministry of Education for prompt consideration and necessary intervention.

The commissioner commended AANFE for its dedication to empowering adult learners and out-of-school individuals through literacy education, vocational training and life skills development, describing the agency as a critical institution in promoting self reliance and economic empowerment.

The Anambra State Agency for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education is responsible for implementing adult literacy, continuing education and non formal learning programmes across the state, providing educational opportunities for adults and out-of-school youths while promoting vocational skills and life long learning to enhance productivity, employment and community development.

The visit forms part of Dr. Ogugua’s ongoing familiarisation tour of agencies under the Ministry of Education, aimed at strengthening service delivery, advancing Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s vision of an inclusive, accessible and functional education system in Anambra State.
