Theme: Reducing Plastic Pollution for a Cleaner Environment
By Lilian Ezejiegu
Every July third, the world observes International Plastic Bag Free Day, promoting awareness about environmental dangers posed by single-use plastic bags while encouraging sustainable alternatives protecting ecosystems, biodiversity, public health, and livelihoods.
Plastic bags often litter streets, markets, waterways, and farmlands, blocking drainage channels, causing flooding, harming wildlife, contaminating soil, and contributing significantly to the growing challenge of environmental pollution worldwide today.
The observance calls on governments, businesses, institutions, and citizens to reduce dependence on disposable plastics by embracing reusable bags, responsible waste management, recycling initiatives, and environmentally friendly consumption habits for sustainability. In Nigeria, increasing environmental awareness continues encouraging communities to adopt cleaner practices that reduce pollution, safeguard public health, preserve natural resources, and create healthier surroundings for present and future generations alike.
In Anambra State, Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration prioritizes environmental sustainability through improved waste management, urban renewal, cleaner cities, erosion control, and the Mr. Governor has declared State of Emergency on Environmental Degradation, campaigns promoting responsible environmental stewardship across communities statewide.
The administration’s commitment to transforming Anambra into a clean, green, livable homeland reflects the importance of collective responsibility in protecting the environment while supporting sustainable economic growth and healthier living conditions.
Residents, traders, students, and organizations should support environmental conservation by minimizing plastic waste, separating recyclables, participating in community sanitation exercises, and embracing eco-friendly alternatives whenever practical and accessible every day.
As the world marks International Plastic Bag Free Day 2026, everyone should remember that simple daily actions, including refusing unnecessary plastic bags, contribute meaningfully toward cleaner communities and a more sustainable planet. Together, through responsible environmental practices, public awareness, and government support,
Anambra can continue setting positive examples in environmental management, ensuring cleaner surroundings and a healthier future for generations yet unborn.
