The Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ekene Ogugua, has called for stronger collaboration with the Post Primary Schools Service Commission (PPSSC) to reposition the state’s education sector and improve service delivery.

Dr. Ogugua made the call during a visit to the commission in Awka on July 1 as part of ongoing consultations with key stakeholders aimed at advancing the state’s education reform agenda.

Accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Ifeoma Agbaizu, the commissioner commended the management and staff of PPSSC for sustaining the education system before his appointment, urging them to remain committed to the transformation drive.

He said his appointment aligns with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s vision of transforming education through innovation, digitalisation and practical learning, noting that these initiatives would bridge existing gaps and raise educational standards.

“Our vision is to bridge the gap between our education system and global standards by embracing innovation, digitalisation and practical learning that will improve educational outcomes,” he said.

Dr. Ogugua stressed the need for continuous training and retraining of teachers, maintaining that quality education depends on a well-equipped and highly motivated teaching workforce.

He emphasized that students must remain the focal point of every educational policy and practice, as effective teaching is critical to achieving better learning outcomes.

The commissioner condemned examination malpractice, expressing concern over the growing trend of teachers abandoning their duty posts, particularly in rural communities, warning that appropriate measures had been put in place to address the challenge.

He directed the immediate suspension of all staff postings pending his approval, cautioning against the collection of unauthorised fees, urging education officers to uphold professionalism, accountability and integrity in the discharge of their duties.

Earlier, the Chairman of PPSSC, Mrs. Bernadine Anigor, described the visit as the beginning of a renewed partnership aimed at strengthening secondary education in the state.

She appealed for improved incentives for teachers serving in rural communities, increased funding for the commission and the provision of operational vehicles to enhance service delivery.

Mrs. Anigor assured the commissioner of the commission’s full support in implementing policies and programmes that would advance the ongoing reforms in the education sector.
