The Anambra State Government has intensified efforts to maintain a clean, safe and flood-free capital city as the Anambra State Capital Territory Development Agency (ACTDA) carried out a comprehensive environmental clean-up exercise across Awka.

The exercise, held on July 4, followed Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s directive aimed at promoting environmental sanitation and reducing the risk of flooding in the state capital.

ACTDA staff were deployed to strategic locations across Awka, where they cleared blocked drainage channels, evacuated refuse, and removed debris obstructing the free flow of water. Areas prone to flooding due to clogged drainages received special attention during the operation.

Speaking during the exercise, the Head of Administration, ACTDA, Mr. Azubike Ogugua, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to fully implementing the Governor’s environmental sanitation agenda.

He described environmental cleanliness as a collective responsibility, urging residents to support government efforts by disposing of waste responsibly, regularly desilting drainage channels around their homes and business premises, and maintaining clean surroundings.

Mr. Ogugua noted that indiscriminate disposal of waste, particularly polythene bags and plastic bottles, remains one of the major causes of blocked drainages and flooding in the state, stressing that sustained public cooperation is essential to achieving a cleaner and healthier environment.

He reiterated the Anambra State Government’s commitment to enforcing environmental sanitation laws, promoting responsible waste management as part of its drive to build a cleaner, greener and more resilient Anambra.
