Health experts have identified several everyday foods that help protect kidney function, reduce inflammation, and support the kidneys’ role in filtering waste, regulating blood pressure, and maintaining the body’s fluid balance.
They advised people living with kidney disease, as well as those at risk due to diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease, to consume foods that are low in sodium, potassium, and phosphorus while increasing their intake of antioxidant rich foods.
The experts recommended blueberries for their high antioxidant and fiber content, noting that they help combat inflammation, reduce oxidative stress, and support gut and kidney health. Cauliflower was also identified as a suitable low potassium alternative to potatoes.

They advised replacing salt with garlic and fresh herbs such as rosemary, thyme, oregano, parsley, and cilantro to reduce sodium intake and support healthy blood pressure.
Red bell peppers and olive oil were also recommended for their rich vitamin content, antioxidants, and anti inflammatory properties, making them suitable for kidney-friendly diets.
The experts further identified apples and red or purple grapes as beneficial because of their fiber, antioxidants, and plant compounds that help support blood vessel and kidney health.
Salmon was recommended as a healthy protein source because of its omega-3 fatty acids, although moderation was advised for people with kidney disease. White rice was also identified as a suitable carbohydrate because it is naturally low in potassium and phosphorus.
The specialists stressed that no single food can prevent kidney disease, urging people instead to maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats, and low sodium seasonings while limiting processed foods.
They added that healthy eating habits support kidney and heart health and help reduce the long term risk of chronic kidney disease.
