The Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, has urged women leaders of the Anambra State Town Union Council (ASTUC) to take the lead in promoting environmental cleanliness and become environmental marshals in their various communities.
Aguiyi made the call while addressing members of the ASTUC Women’s Wing at the ASTUC Secretariat Old Government House, Awka, on Oct. 7, noting that women and children are among the most vulnerable to environmental challenges, particularly flooding and other environmental emergencies.
The commissioner urged the women to champion environmental cleanliness campaigns in their communities, markets, parks and village squares, stressing that their active involvement would strengthen environmental awareness and promote responsible environmental practices at the grassroots.

He also encouraged the women to educate their children and community members on the importance of tree planting, noting that trees help mitigate climate change, control erosion, provide shade and enhance the beauty of communities.
Aguiyi said environmental values instilled in children today would have lasting positive effects on future generations, adding that trees planted today would provide significant environmental benefits for years to come.
As part of the initiative, the commissioner presented 300 palm tree seedlings to the women for planting across their various communities. The seedlings were sponsored by Chief Christopher Ndubuisi, popularly known as Ikenga Umuawulu, in support of environmental sustainability and community-based tree-planting initiatives.
Earlier, the President of the ASTUC Women’s Wing, Dr. Blessing Onuigbo, commended the Anambra State Government for appointing an Environment Commissioner who, she said, understands the importance of involving women in environmental matters.
Onuigbo assured the commissioner that the women would take the environmental sensitisation campaign to the grassroots and mobilise their communities towards cleaner, greener and more environmentally responsible practices.
