The Catholic Men Organisation (CMO), Archdiocese of Onitsha, has concluded its maiden convention with the donation of two coaster buses, a pledge to complete its library project at Shanahan University, Onitsha, financial contributions and the presentation of trophies to competition winners.
The convention was held on October 10, at the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity, Onitsha, with the aim of renewing members’ commitment to their responsibilities as christian fathers and defenders of the faith. The programme was initiated by the CMO President General, Sir Evarist Uba (KSJI), with the support of the organisation’s spiritual directors, Rev. Frs. Sampson Ogbuebuna and Fidelis Nwanze.

The Metropolitan Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev. Valerian Okeke, was represented by the Vicar General, Rev. Fr. John Bosco Okafor. Delivering the Archbishop’s homily, Rev. Fr. Joseph Umeasiegbu commended the organisation for convening the first event of its kind in the Archdiocese.
Speaking on the theme, “Champions of Christ, Defenders of Faith and Family,” the Archbishop expressed hope that the convention would address the declining commitment of some catholic men to church activities and encourage them to strengthen their faith and promote christian family values.
In his address, Sir Evarist Uba said the convention had provided catholic men with a stronger voice within and outside the church. He urged members to remain steadfast in their faith in Jesus Christ and demonstrate christian values in their daily lives.
A major highlight of the event was the announcement by Sen. Tony Nwoye, the
Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Anambra North Senatorial District in the 2027 general election, of his donation of two brand-new coaster buses to the CMO. He also pledged to fund the completion of the organisation’s library project at Shanahan University, Onitsha, a gesture that attracted enthusiastic applause from participants.
Similarly, Sen. Victor Umeh, who represents Anambra Central Senatorial District on the NDC platform, made a cash donation in support of the organisation’s projects. He also expressed concern over Nigeria’s economic challenges and argued that the situation could worsen if the NDC presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, did not become the next President.
The Chairman of the occasion, Sir Azubike Okafor, commended Uba for his leadership and efforts to raise the profile of the CMO. He also made personal financial contributions and presented donations from his friends.
Other dignitaries included Bro. Azuka Chukwunonyelu, Deputy President General and Chairman of the Convention Planning Committee; Ide Anyamene, President of CMO Pillars and Patrons; Chief Dr. Sir Raphael Omaliko, organising Grand Knight of the Knights of St. Mulumba in Onitsha; and Hon. Casmir Izukanne, CMO Secretary General.
Also present were the Director of the Catholic Women Organisation (CWO), Archdiocese of Onitsha, Dame Dr. Ngozi Nwanosike, and her Secretary, Lady Chika Obike.
The convention featured the presentation of trophies and medals to football competition winners by the competition chairman, Hon. Pascal Aniegbuna, as well as cultural dances and a march-past by the various regions. Sir Azubike Okafor, CMO Chaplain Rev. Fr. Sampson Ogbuebuna and President General Sir Evarist Uba took the salute, while Barr. Chike Enedo served as Master of Ceremonies.
The successful gathering marked a significant milestone for the organisation, strengthening unity among members and renewing their commitment to Christian faith and family life.
