Residents of Ugamuma Village in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, expressed concern over a deep gully erosion that is threatening critical infrastructure, homes, and public institutions within the community.
The erosion site, located at the end of a road that passes in front of the Anambra State School of Health Technology, the Anti-Cult Police Station, and Union Secondary School (USS), Obosi, has continued to expand, raising fears that the road could be cut off if urgent intervention is not undertaken.
Community members described the age-long gully as a major ecological disaster that has already consumed large portions of land in the area and continues to worsen with the increasing rainfall.
Speaking on the development on June 24, the Principal of Union Secondary School, Mrs. Ebele Onugha, appealed to government authorities to urgently address the erosion menace, warning that nearby homes and public facilities, including the school, could be endangered if the situation persists.
She noted that the advancing gully poses a serious threat to residents and infrastructure in the area and called for immediate remedial measures to prevent further destruction.
Also commenting, a native of Ugamuma Village, Mr. Stanley Abanofor, lamented that the erosion had been destroying farmlands and residential properties for years. He observed that the problem has intensified during the current rainy season and is gradually advancing towards homes and public buildings.
Another resident, Mrs. Deborah Okeke, stated that several individuals whose properties are located near the erosion site had invested substantial resources in efforts to contain the menace, but noted that the measures had yielded limited results.
The residents appealed to the Anambra State and Federal Governments to urgently intervene in addressing the erosion menace, warning that continued inaction could result in the destruction of additional land, residential properties, and critical public infrastructure. They emphasized the need for immediate and decisive measures to halt further environmental degradation and protect lives, livelihoods, and property within the community.
